The Mtwara urban water supply and sanitation authority (MTUWASA) was established along with other seventeen (17) Regional water authorities in January, 1998 under the work ordnance, Cap.281. This water Act repealed and replaced by the supply and sanitation Act No.12 of 2009. MTUWASA is a legal entity mandated to provide sustainable water supply and sanitation services in Mtwara Mikindani Municipality. Area of operation includes Mtwara Mikindani Municipality, Nanyamba town and Mtwara peri-urban areas.

Board of Directors
MTUWASA is governed by ten members of Board of Directors appointed by the Minister responsible for water affairs. The Board convenes its regular meetings quarterly and at any other time when deemed necessary to deliberate on the affairs of the authority.

Management
Day to day operation of the authority is managed by the Managing Director who is also the Secretary to the Board. There are four Departments under the managing Director namely: The Technical Department, The Finance Department, The Commercial Department and Human Resource and Administration Department.
  • The Technical Department headed by the Technical Manager has four sections which include: Plant and Production, Water Network, Sanitation Operation and Planning and construction.
  • The Finance Department under the Finance Manager mainly deals with Revenue, Expenditure and Supplies.
  • The Commercial Department under the Commercial Manager has three sections responsible for Customer Services, Credit Control and Database and Billing.
  • The Human Resource and Administration Department has two sections of Human Resources and Administration.
Other supporting units include Procurement unit, Internal Audit unit, Legal unit Public Relation unit and Information and Communication unit.

Our Vision and Mission
The vision of Authority is to become an excellent water supply and sanitation authority in Tanzania in delivery portable quality water supply and sanitation disposal services and our mission is to provide sustainable service meeting national and international standards at affordable price through committed and professional staffs.

Water Production
MTUWASA has a total of six (6) sources which are mainly used to serve all areas as declared by the Minister Responsible with water affairs. The six sources are detailed below:-
  • Mtawanya Well Field
    This source is located on the along the main road to Madimba and is adjacent to Mtawanya Community Development Training Institute. The water source have 8 boreholes with yield ranging from 30m3/day – 120m3/h. The total discharge capacity of the sources is estimated to 12,500m3/day. Water produced from the boreholes always undergoes treatment process to remove iron and manganese content so as to acquire both national and international standards

  • Rwelu Well Field
    This source is located on south of Mikindani old town at a distance of about 5km. The water source have 3 boreholes with a discharge ranging from 18m3/day – 33m3/h. The total discharge capacity of the resource is estimated to 2,000m3/day.

  • Mbuo Well Field
    This source is located along Mtwara- Lindi main road just adjacent to Dangote Cement Factory. The water sources have 3 boreholes with discharge ranging from 28m3/h-33m3/h. The total capacity of the source is estimated to 2100m3/day.

  • Mchuchu Well Field
    This source is located adjacent to Mikindani old town. The water sources have 1 borehole yielding 30m3/h. Within Mchuchu also there are springs with various capacities two of the have a total discharge capacity of 1,700m3/day. The total discharge within the source is estimated to 2,400m3/day.

  • Mnyawi Well Field
    This source is located 6km south of Nanyamba town. The water sources have 7 boreholes with discharge ranging from 7m3/h – 10m3/h. The total capacity of the sources is estimated to 940m3/day.

  • Mbawalachini
    This is located on west of Naliendele Research Institute at a distance of about 3.0km. The water sources have 2 boreholes with discharge ranging from 10m3/h – 15m3/h. The total capacity of the sources is estimated to 600m3/day.

Therefore, the total discharge capacity from the six sources is estimated to 20,540m3/day against installed plant capacity of 12,080m3/day.
